Emergency Inspection and Repair Design/Build AC Electric Tower Piles
Tower in Great Egg Harbor near Beesley’s Point, NJ
In August 2016, Atlantic City Electric (Exelon) noted severe deterioration on one of the concrete piles supporting the electric towers in Great Egg Harbor located in Beesley’s Point, NJ.
W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C. was contacted to perform an emergency inspection of the 8 pile tower to determine if the tower structure was stable and determine what repairs were needed. The inspection found that two of the piles had 75% to 100% section loss and required emergency repairs. The remaining piles required protective jackets due to the deterioration of the existing pile jackets with minor to moderate deterioration on the exposed portions of concrete piles. The design for the repair of the 8 piles was immediately started and after materials were received, the construction began in October. A steel jacket with concrete fill was used to repair the two severely deteriorated piles. The existing concrete jacket on three of the piles was removed and replaced with a reinforced fiberglass pile jacket. The remaining three piles only had deteriorion on the existing jackets and the jackets were encased with FRP wrap and a HPDE jacket. Total cost for the project was ~$208,900.
