Bridge Replacement Design for Crescent Road
Bridge #1695-001 Over Post Brook
West Milford, Passaic County, NJ
In 2013, W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C. completed the design including all permitting for the replacement for Crescent Road Bridge. The existing deficient bridge was the only access to Gordon Lakes community and needed to be replaced. The existing abutments consisted of roughly poured concrete and could not be including in the new bridge design. Continual access for emergency vehicles was required throughout the construction of the new bridge; therefore a staged construction was designed and implemented. The bridge required a complete replacement in a single 24 hour period. Close coordination with emergency services was required to assure safety for all residents. The actual road closures only lasted 2 hours on any of the phases of construction. Additionally, designs were provided to assure that during the road closures, the road could be reopened in under 15 minutes for emergency access. The new design included reinforced concrete spread footings with reinforced concrete beam superstructure and steel guiderail. The new bridge is 20’-0“ c-c bearings and 20’-0” wide. The existing width of 20’-0” was maintained due to existing right-of-ways. A new inlet was included in the design to accommodate existing utilities and maintain proper drainage.
W. J. Castle performed the construction inspection for the project. All construction submittals were competed and approved as required. The bridge opened for traffic in September 2013.
